There’s something special about the way life comes full circle. For me, that moment came during my senior year at Colorado Mesa University, when I had the incredible opportunity to photograph the women’s lacrosse team. This wasn’t just any team—this was a team I had been a part of during my freshman and sophomore years.
Stepping onto the field as a player felt like a dream. I loved the game and the bond I shared with my teammates, but by the end of my sophomore year, I made the difficult decision to step away. Academics and personal goals were calling, and I knew it was time to take a break. I also wanted to slow down and appreciate Colorado for all it had to offer—the vast landscapes, the mountains, the sunsets. Sometimes, in the rush of life, we forget to savor the beauty that surrounds us.
Returning to the field behind the camera lens gave me a whole new perspective. I was no longer the one charging up the field but rather the one capturing those moments of determination, teamwork, and passion. Photographing the team was my way of still being connected to the sport I loved while appreciating the creative freedom that photography gave me. The energy of the game is contagious, and capturing those fleeting moments felt like capturing pieces of my own journey.
Every shot felt like more than just a photograph. It was a reflection of my growth, both as a player and as someone who learned to step back and see things from a new perspective. I found a sense of balance in my life by moving away from the game for a while, only to come back with a different kind of love for it—one that let me appreciate the players, the game, and the beauty of being both a participant and an observer.
Photography has given me a new lens—literally and figuratively—on life, and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to close out my college journey than by capturing those moments that meant so much to me.
